How to Prepare for Your Job Search

Is it time for you to prepare for a job search?

For most of our clients, job searching isn’t just about strategy.

Preparing for a job search also means understanding what it takes it takes to actually execute it - and creating the time and space in your life to make that happen.

It means building confidence and making decisions - every step of the way.

If you’re thinking about your next steps, here are my tips for preparing for your job search:

You don’t need to know where to start to get started.

Isn’t that a relief?! We have a tried and true framework and resources for job seekers - and it starts with self reflection.

It’s a mistake to think you need to know exactly what you’re looking for or exactly what your resume needs to do for you before you get started.

That’s what the process is for!

If you’re looking for some inspiration, try these five questions here.

Focus on your own goals and priorities.

Success is not going to look the same for everyone.

We have a saying in our community: “Run your own race.”

For every client who is ready to take on a bigger role, another is ready to take a step back from managing to get back to doing work they really love.

Some clients have a singular focus on their search and some need more time as the balance multiple priorities.

You may need to give yourself permission to make a move that might not make sense for someone else. That’s totally okay!

Commit to the time that it might take.

Way too many people don’t hear back right away and decide that their job search a failure.

I often see job searches last between 8 weeks and 6 months.

The bigger the transition, the more priorities you’re navigating simultaneously, the more likely your search will be on the longer side.

Give yourself the gift of time so you can make the best decisions for yourself.

Don’t do it all on your own.

One of the biggest mistakes I’ve seen people make is turning “buckling down” into total isolation.

Let people support you, help you and cheer you on!

You will almost certainly encounter roadblocks of some kind.

This is why community is a critical component of our job search services. Everyone gets access to our private channel and live calls to meet new people, learn from others, and actually enjoy parts of this process!

Plan to be picky.

One of the reasons we like to encourage you to cast a long runway for your job search is so you don’t feel like you have to take the first thing that comes along unless it feels like a great fit. You should have high standards for your future employer so plan to understand your value and wait for the right offer.

A strategic job search is more than tips + tricks – it’s all about your attitude!

You have so much to offer so make sure that you’re giving yourself every chance to be successful.
