3 Easy Ways to Elevate Your Job Search
Landing a new job that is also a strategic and purposeful move is often about elevating your expectations and understanding your value as a professional.
Standing out and getting traction with your online applications is almost never about volume.
It’s about having a strategy and putting in the work to be a clearly qualified applicant.
These beliefs are at the core of our job search strategy services.
If you’re curious about how we help our clients gain traction, here are some of my favorite tips on how to elevate your job search so you can make a move that matters:
Stop applying everywhere
One of the biggest mistakes our clients make before we begin working together is relying on a huge volume of applications in order to get interviews or speed up the process.
But often this volume of applications reflects a lack of focus of your priorities and time spent pursuing roles and organizations you’re not that interested in.
Relying on the volume of applications also doesn’t help you gain traction because you haven’t taken the time to align your resume for the roles that you are applying for.
When you stop sending applications everywhere, you can use that time instead to consider what you really want and customize your applications accordingly.
In other words, we’re talking quality over quantity.
Prioritize aligning your applications for the roles that you’re applying for
If you’re making “tweaks” to your resumes, and still not getting traction, it could be that your tweaks are simply not enough.
We want our clients working from a strategic and optimized template that is easy to read and scan quickly, offers a structure of quickly conveying qualifications, and experience that emphasizes outcomes and accomplishments.
Then, we make “tweaks” from there.
We encourage our clients to practice aligning their applications from Day 1 - and start practicing with a low stakes job opportunity if possible.
(It’s really my preference that my clients learn our strategies before they find the job they’re super excited about so they are as prepared as possible to submit a compelling application!)
This is why we offer Rapid Reviews as part of our services – so you can practice the strategy and get insight before you hit submit on your applications.
This level of strategy and alignment is often exactly what it takes to stand out online.
Even if you’re a career changer, this skill and a little persistence are what makes it possible to land an interview, even with no connections.
Find and share sample job postings so that your friends know what you’re looking for
One of the best ways to elevate your job search is to let other people help and support you along the way.
The easiest way is to simply let people know what you’re looking to do next – and to share a sample of what you want so that people can help find you the right kinds of opportunities and connections.
You really can’t assume that people know what you want – and it’s our job to share our goals with people and provide examples so that they can support us and share relevant opportunities.
These shifts have the power to transform your job search – and your career. I hope you’ll give them a try!
