Do You Need Multiple Resume Templates?
The question of whether you need multiple versions of your resume is a common one, and the answer often depends on your specific job search goals.
Tailoring your resume to different roles can significantly impact your job search success, but it’s essential to understand when and why multiple templates are necessary.
I want to share some of the ways we help clients consider whether they should have multiple resumes—or if one may be sufficient!
When One Resume Is Enough
If your career path is linear and the jobs you’re applying for are very similar, one well-crafted resume may be sufficient. If you have spent your career in brand marketing and are applying exclusively for brand marketing roles, a single resume that highlights your relevant skills and experience should work well.
In this case, you can focus on refining this one version, ensuring it’s aligned with your target roles. This approach saves time and allows you to concentrate your efforts on applying to jobs rather than constantly tweaking your resume. (This podcast episode should help you make the most of tailoring one that will stand out!)
When You Need Multiple Versions
If you are exploring different types of roles or industries, multiple resume templates can be beneficial. Let me use myself as an example.
If I were to leave self-employment and pursue full-time work, I’d certainly look at career and HR roles. But let’s say that I also wanted to consider marketing roles and apply all of the skills I’ve learned marketing my own business.
Using the same resume for these different kinds of roles (with very different qualifications!) would dilute my experience and make me less competitive. A tailored resume for each of these roles would allow me to emphasize the most relevant skills and experiences, making me a stronger candidate.
Creating multiple templates can save time in the long run. Instead of tailoring a single resume every time you apply for a different type of job, you can have pre-made templates that are already aligned with the types of roles you’re targeting.
How to Manage Multiple Templates
Managing multiple resume templates doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Most professionals only need two or three versions. Start by identifying your target roles and then create a resume for each. For instance, you might have one resume that emphasizes your experience in education and another that positions you for corporate roles.
Once you have these templates, it becomes easier to tailor them for specific applications. You can quickly adjust your summary of qualifications or other sections to better fit the job you’re applying for without having to start from scratch each time.
In summary, whether or not you need multiple resume templates can depend on the breadth of roles you’re pursuing. If your target jobs are similar, one resume will likely suffice. However, if you’re exploring different industries or roles, having a few tailored templates can help you present yourself as a more competitive candidate.
