4 Phrases for Better Communication at Work

Managing challenging bosses is part of the job.

(Yes, even GOOD jobs.)

When there’s so much stress that clients can’t focus on their search – or when so many of us are working (and struggling) in newly remote roles, we often need to give them some tools to put some boundaries in place and communicate effectively.

Here are four phrases we’ve been sharing lately to help people set boundaries, share feedback and ask for clarification at work.

“Here’s what I’m noticing…”

Use this when: things aren’t going according to plan, you need to share additional information or a perspective without judgement or you want to challenge or raise issues respectfully.

“I need clarification.”

Use this when: policies, plans or processes appear to have been abandoned or changed without notice, a decision has been made without communication, or you’re uncertain how to move forward.

“Here’s how I can help…”

Use this when: you’re ready to take responsibility for all or part of the solution, you can offer missing context or information, you’re excited to play a part in solving a problem.

“Here’s what I need to be successful”

Use this when: you’ve been asked or have offered additional responsibilities but you need additional resources, support or need other tasks de-prioritized or delegated
